“The Traveling Twenties”

(AKA Random Acts of Kindness)
“The Beginning…”

It started one day with an eye-opening realization. Not everyone had enough to eat or a friend or smile or heat or even a place to lay their head at night. Everyone was different. Everyone was in need and some were in need more than others. Twenties found their way into some very interesting adventures when they were put into the hands of those who cared but were unable to do. Those people then put twenties into the hands of those who saw but didn’t have twenties to give.  When hearts say help and God says move, adventures are soon to follow!!!

Traveling Twenties Adventure #6:

20-wingsThe sign said “Airborne Vet needs help.” He was on the side of a highway turning lane. He had a pole to lean on and a Chihuahua in arms. We were afraid he would stumble and fall down the small embankment. We said “don’t fall,” as he clutched the puppy and the cardboard sign to his chest in a tight grip. His legs didn’t seem to work smoothly as he took three jerky steps that we were sure would result in a horrible spill. He replied to my words of caution. “I am all tore up. Thank you, missus” were his next words as the twenty moved to his hand. The smile did not reach his eyes probably because pain had taken permanent residence there. Or maybe it was the pain of being a veteran and having to ask for help on the side of a road.

Adventure #7 coming soon!

The purpose of MENTORS is to recruit volunteers to join with us as mentors in South Walton. There is currently no mentoring program in Walton County Schools. There are many great programs outside of the school system but many of the children most in need of a mentor do not participate in any outside activities or programs. The teachers and staff are great at what they do but cannot mentor all of the children in need. So that’s where YOU come in! Typically you will only need to volunteer 30 minutes of your time, one day a week to mentor a child who needs a positive adult influence in their life. If you have even the slightest interest in becoming a mentor, please email me at Mentorsouthwalton@yahoo.com

reader’s corner:

The Signature of Jesus by Brennan Manning

The Signature of Jesus challenges the gospel of “cheap grace” and calls the church to radical discipleship. With passion and boldness, author Brennan Manning invites readers to risk living life as Jesus lived—committed to simplicity, purity of heart, and obedience to the gospel.

As a radical alternative this book is offered to Christians who want to live by faith and not by mere “religion,” for those who recognize that many of the burning theological issues in the church today are neither burning nor theological; who see Christianity neither as a moral code or a belief system but as a love affair; who have not forgotten that they are followers of a crucified Christ; who know that following him means living dangerously; who want to live the gospel without compromise; who have no greater desire than to have his signature written on the pages of their lives.

“Behold,” Jesus proclaims, “I stand at the door and knock.” You may have already met him at the door…but do you truly know him? Have you been transformed by His furious, passionate, unexplainable love? Join Brennan Manning, the bestselling author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, on a personal journey to experience Christ’s love and live with His passion.

Hilda McDonald finally made it to a room last night. She is in ICU-8, but not because of her condition: The hospital is full. She may have a permanent pacemaker put in today. The knee surgery itself went great.

Nevertheless, she’s a trooper, surgery over!   She will go directly from Sacred Heart to rehab at Grand Blvd. in 2 days.  She will stay there for 5 days.  At 91, she’s still our strong girl!  Reminder, also, Caroline Wallace is at the same rehab.  If either of them are out of their rooms, leave a note.  Two great ladies!

The address for both Caroline and Hilda is 138 Sandestin Ln, Miramar Beach, FL 32550
We’ll keep you updated.  Thanks for all of the prayers and love!

______

Chris Perry, Pastor of Good News United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa Beach died in his sleep this week.  Please pray for his family as well as his church community in their time of need.

_______

Thank you so much to our prayer warriors for all their support and prayers, I really could feel them flowing into my heart and during my meditation times while here in bed, praying.

It seems inevitable that the Lord was slowing me down, to the point of an unexpected surgery and it has made me feel humbled and thankful….especially to be ALIVE! especially to all of you! God bless you all and keep you healthy and safe. I love you all!

Thank you,
Nina Horn

My granddaughter Abby is having pains in her abdomen.  She was released from the hospital a few weeks ago after having surgery for a ruptured appendix.  She is only 11 years old.  Please pray for her and our family.

I visited Caroline Wallace this morning. I was very surprised how well she appeared. She was sitting up in a regular chair. She knew me. She spoke as well as I have ever known her to speak, but she was waiting to go to speech therapy. The place where she is recovering is called Grand Blvd Rehab. Between Grand Blvd shopping and Sacred Heart Hospital. Used to be called Destin Rehab, I think.  The address is 138 Sandestin Ln, Miramar Beach, FL 32550

Nancy McConnell

______

This is the daughter of a long time friend of mine.  Her name is Emily.  She was diagnosed with melanoma 2 yrs ago and has already had 2 surgeries and lots of chemotherapy.    She is 32 and is currently participating in a trial drug program that is just like having chemo for 2 more years to hopefully prevent the cancer from returning.   Please pray for her as she is one special young lady.  She has overcome so much… and with still so much to go.  Please pray for her and her Mom.

Thank you!!   Barbara Riddick

GOOD NEWS!

WOW!  You guys are TERRIFIC!  Prayers work!  Lloyd doing so much better all of a sudden after asking for prayers!  BP stable, HG little low, but stable, potassium normalized, platelets very low, but OK for him.  He is amazing!

He’s still in ICU but will probably be moved to a regular room tomorrow. He’s ready to go to the beach!

Thanks so much for all your prayers!
