“The Traveling Twenties”

(AKA Random Acts of Kindness)
“The Beginning…”

It started one day with an eye-opening realization. Not everyone had enough to eat or a friend or smile or heat or even a place to lay their head at night. Everyone was different. Everyone was in need and some were in need more than others. Twenties found their way into some very interesting adventures when they were put into the hands of those who cared but were unable to do. Those people then put twenties into the hands of those who saw but didn’t have twenties to give.  When hearts say help and God says move, adventures are soon to follow!!!

Traveling Twenties Adventure #7:  Paying it Forward
While talking to some friends, it was noted that not many places want homeless in or around their businesses. Some actually chased them away. One place we were told was different. They had actively changed their attitude toward those in need. We decided to stop by and see what they were doing. A few folks knew about it because they knew the proprietor. What we saw there was an interesting sign that said Pay It Forward. This is a popular idea floating around drive-thru places where people pay for the person behind them. But what does it mean in a fast food restaurant?  When we asked about it we were told the homeless walk by and can look at the board. If something is written on the board they can come in and ask for it. It has already been paid for and will be given with no charge. WHAT A GREAT IDEA!!! A “twenty” was just jumping out of our fingers to be given for food for someone in need so we gave the owner one. They promised to put several items of food up on the board. We encourage you to stop by your favorite fast food place, grab a bite, and PAY IT FORWARD for there are many homeless that could use a meal and this kindness too. We may not personally see who gets to eat that food but we know it will help someone who needs help and who knows? Some day they may be able to “pay it forward” too!

Adventure #8 coming soon!

The empty Chair

A dear friend of mine from Mississippi, who used to be in real estate, has given away everything she owned and is now working to promote Suicide Awareness among the youth.  Just 6 years ago, she lost her son in his bedroom. He had hung himself.  This is the link to her Firefly Ministries: http://fireflyoutreach.com/

She is in town and shared with me that the Lord has prepared her to tell her son’s story and to help many parents that have faced this tragedy in their lives.  She is writing a book and needing a place to stay for a few weeks in order to complete this book, and I am trying to help her find this place.  She has devoted the rest of her life to God’s will in this endeavor and needs rest, quiet, and peace in order to finish her book.  Patti is staying with me over the weekend and I hope to bring her to your service this Sunday to meet you.

  1. Please join me in prayers for Firefly Ministries for my friend, Patti Herrington, and what she is doing for the youth of this world by speaking out about this horrible tragedy, in hopes that she can save lives of those that suffer.
  2. Patti is looking for a quiet refuge where she can stay for a few weeks to finish her book. While staying in our area, she wants to speak to the youth in some of our schools and will be open to make speaking engagements in some churches. Any help from our congregation to assist her in making this happen would be greatly appreciated. Since she lost her son to suicide, Patti prays, listening to God and she lives by following wherever the Lord leads her.

Thanking you,
Nina Horn

Devotions for the Beach and Days You Wish You Were There by Thomas Nelson

Dig your feet in the sand and let the water cool your toes as you escape into the beauty of God’s seaside creations, and hear His voice more clearly than perhaps anywhere else.

There’s nothing quite like the warmth and relaxation of the beach―away from the stresses of the world and into a place of peace and refreshment. Devotions for the Beach is the gentle breeze that takes you there, to see the majesty of God and to open your heart and soul to the One who created it all. These ninety devotions explore the parallels of life with the elements of the shore to help you see God, to find hope, to draw strength, and to rest in the comfort of His arms throughout your day. Included are striking photographs with a fresh, contemporary design for timeless appeal.

This book is a gentle reminder of days at the beach and the call of God’s love.

prayer

family attempting to flee El Salvador!

Prayers are badly needed for Marta Alicia and her two girls.  The mission group from ASF built their house in 2013.

Thank you all for your interest in and love for this humble family.

I just met with them this afternoon to work out details of getting them out of the country as quickly as possible.  Marta Alicia (the mother) reported to me that yesterday the gang members shoved a newspaper article under her door which recounts a young girl who was assassinated for refusing to become a gang member girlfriend.  They wrote in the margins, “This is what will happen to you.”

I asked the family to under no circumstances return either to their home or to the school where the girls attend.  They have fled from their home and are staying in a shelter downtown for now.  We made plans to get passports for the family tomorrow.

Thank you all for your information and support.  I now have a contact in Guatemala and one in Mexico. The family would like to go to Mexico if possible, but we will have to evaluate the requirements for entering that country.  For now the plan is to get them to Guatemala as soon as possible, maybe by the middle of next week.  I have asked them to show no signs whatsoever that they are leaving, and to tell no one at this point.

Marta Alicia received quite a scare with this latest threat, which is understandable, yet I have reminded them that they are under God’s care and that He above all, will open the doors to them to relocate.  At the end of our meeting, we prayed together.

Regarding donations, here’s the latest from Barb.

“As to the offerings, it would be great if you could hang on to them just for a bit until the situation is more stable and I can figure out how to best use the funds.  It looks like relocation in Mexico will be the best thing for them at the moment, and I have people there who help with these kinds of cases.  Once they are out of El Salvador, I will be better able to receive the offering.  At the moment I am focused on getting them out of the country safely.

Pastor Ronnie also adds that “ASF is involved financially now. As other needs emerge we will holler.”

Please keep us all in your prayers and especially ask that they will be able to receive passports.

Again, I can’t tell you how much this means to the family, and to me, to know that there are others who are concerned for them!”

Blessings,
