“The Traveling Twenties”

(AKA Random Acts of Kindness)
“The Beginning…”

It started one day with an eye-opening realization. Not everyone had enough to eat or a friend or smile or heat or even a place to lay their head at night. Everyone was different. Everyone was in need and some were in need more than others. Twenties found their way into some very interesting adventures when they were put into the hands of those who cared but were unable to do. Those people then put twenties into the hands of those who saw but didn’t have twenties to give.  When hearts say help and God says move, adventures are soon to follow!!!

Adventure #8: Conversations

We were at a local gathering place when we heard a conversation about a person who was asking for money on the corner. “Don’t give it to him. He doesn’t need it. He’s just asking for money cause he wants to.” We had to smile. Most people would rather do anything else than beg or ask others for money. Something happens inside a person to actually make that decision to ask another human being for help. Some would rather die than ask for help.

The person talking, we knew well. He was of the latter group. Rather than ask for a ride he would and had driven himself to the hospital in an emergency. On a tight budget, he often would play music for a free meal or the hopes of a tip or two. And he was first in line at a new Hardees so he could get free coffee for life even though he had to stand there for what seemed like forever. But he would not ask even his friends for a ride or help in anyway. He just couldn’t.

The next conversation we heard was in a restaurant by three workers from a restaurant next door. It struck us as strange as where they worked was not known as a high-end place and yet they talked as if they were world travelers or at least US travelers. They were discussing where it was “BEST” to be homeless. The conversation both fascinated and horrified us. Their discussion took them to Hawaii for of course the weather would make being homeless so much more comfortable and easy there. We wanted to ask how much fun it was in Hawaii or any other state to not know if you would eat that day or if you would have a place to lay your head or if you were sick not even to have an aspirin to help your aches and pains. There is no where it is easy to be homeless. Cold or heat, rain or snow, desert or mountain, ocean or plain, city or rural, there is no place being homeless is great.

We give Twenties to those we see whether on street corners asking like the older man who stood in the cold wind and upon receiving the Twenty went straight into the café to warm up, or the man on the side of the road holding a sign that says “NEED HELP”. We are responsible for doing what we can. We are to respond because we want to be like Jesus. We may not be able to heal the blind but we can show them love. We can’t make the lame walk but we can give them a ride. We can listen and talk and treat them like people whether they feel like one or not.

Adventure #9 coming soon!

Jump Start into Positive Health – FREE!

I am offering 3 opportunities for you to join me for FREE! No matter what your wellness goal(s) (weight loss, improved cholesterol ratios and/or triglyceride levels, reduced markers for inflammation, stabilized blood sugar levels, reduction in the need for medications, even reversal of the disease process), you are sure to gain something positive from our time together.

Jump Start to Positive Health and Healing through the Power of 3

Nutrition 101 – No matter how much you eat or even what you eat, if you are not absorbing the nutrients from the food – YOU ARE AT RISK!  Learn tips and techniques that will make you feel great while you maximize your health and minimize your waistline!

Understanding Digestion – No matter how serious the message, it goes down a bit easier when it’s fun!  We’ll take a ride through the digestive system that is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Meal Planning – Many of us were taught to include every food group at every meal.  This a digestive nightmare!  It requires just a bit of rearranging to work with our perfectly designed system and, fortunately, it’s easy!

Top 3 Reasons people quit their wellness resolutions:
  1. Time– Hectic schedule vs. Health goals

The truth is, we have time for what we do!  Prioritize yourself and your health.

  1. Disappointment- Desired goals vs. Actual results

Future health benefits are like a mirage and thus fail to maintain their inspiration over the long haul. Easy action steps that result in specific, measurable and realistic goals can mean the difference between wishful thinking or staying the course. Learn HOW – Gain new knowledge along with concrete action steps that can be immediately incorporated into daily life.

3.Motivation – Should do vs. Want to

No matter what we are “taught”, there is a tendency to return to our “normal”.  The normal that got us exactly where we don’t want to be anymore!  Learn WHY in addition to WHAT- Understanding why is key to trumping the excuses that have hindered achieving and maintaining Permanent Positive Health.

If you believe you can, you can.
If you think you are beaten–you are.
If you think you dare not–you don’t.

If you want to win but think you can’t,
It is almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose–you’ve lost.

For out in the world we find
That success begins with a fellow’s will;
It’s all in the state of mind.

Life’s battles don’t always go
To the stronger or faster man;
But sooner or later the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can.

I am excited to share with you that our area will be hosting a Full-Circle Speaker in April! A Full-Circle Speaker is a young adult who received a shoe box gift when he/she was a child living overseas. Since then, he/she has been given the opportunity by OCC to return to his/her home country and hand-out shoe box gifts to other children who are still living where he/she once was. It is an amazing and inspiring story to see the fruit of our shoe box gifts that many of us have been packing for years! Our local OCC area team is pleased that Livia Young from Romania will be speaking at two locations the weekend of April 29th. We are hoping you will be able to attend one of these events and hear Livia’s story for yourself. If you think would be interested in hearing a full-circle speaker, there are two:  Friday, April 28 @ 6:00 p.m. at 1st Baptist Church in Defuniak Springs. This is a youth-geared event, but all are welcome! Saturday, April 29 @ 10:00 a.m. there will be a second presentation at First Baptist Church in Niceville. This will be our OCC Celebration event, celebrating God’s faithfulness in 2016.If you have questions or would like more information on an event, don’t hesitate to call or email me.  Also, if you need any type of support later in the year with packing your shoe box gifts, our local area team is here to support you!

As you know, Ken has done a miraculous job being able to maintain a full-time work schedule while undergoing 18-months of harsh chemo treatments.  He exhausted his chemo options back in early February and has been on various drugs since being hit with the news that the cancer has spread to his brain.  Today, he finally had to quit working.  I ask that he remain in your prayers for a miracle cure.  Also, we have a mountain of medical bills, our mortgage, etc., and ask for prayers to rescue us from financial crisis and to give us wisdom and strength to stand strong through this long-standing storm.

God Bless,

Lorraine Sloan

One of our favorite families here in Freeport, FL has received the news no parents want to hear.  Their 10-year-old Scotty was diagnosed yesterday with leukemia.

This family is so very special to us.  They are a military family and have two very precious young girls. Scott, Scotty’s dad, is a Green Beret 7th Group with eleven combat tours.  Nikki, Scotty’s mom is the best mother, wife, and friend!

Please put Scotty and his family on your prayer list.
