Week ending August 27

this weeK…

Dear A Simple Faith Family,

As the flooding in Houston and Southeast Texas continues, we have begun a response effort. Here is both information and opportunity for you:

We have made an immediate donation of $7,500 to the local Salvation Army. This is a large percentage of our funds, as we never keep much more than $25,000 at a time. We will be doing more in the future. Salvation Army has been our relief organization of choice for many years as they are always on the ground, are administratively nimble, and have been doing Christ-motivated work for more than 150 years (See http://www.salvationarmyhouston.org).

We will be partnering with Ecclesia Church in Houston to put “boots on the ground.” Ecclesia, founded and led by Chris Seay, is a large innovative, ASF-like church in the heart of downtown Houston (www.ecclesiahouston.org). Their building has been isolated by the flood, but it is dry and undamaged. This will be a long-term staging area for mucking out flooded homes, demolition, and repair. They will not be able to receive volunteers for some time, but by mid-September, we will know more. They have an extensive list of items they ask teams to bring with them (tools, tarps, etc.), and ASF will be using additional funds to outfit our volunteers with these items. Al Stewart is our point person for those interested in going to Houston. Contact Al at alstewart13@bellsouth.net or (615)-668-4668.

Last, Bobby Rains is organizing a benefit concert for Texas on Friday, September 29. It will be held at ASF and will feature Country Music performer, Ray Scott (www.rayscott.com). Details are forthcoming.

More information will be shared as it becomes available. Thank you for all you are doing and will do. Many prayers for Texas,

ASF’s Karen Snyder has been a companion to Bailey Jones, a young autistic woman since January. They both volunteer at South Walton Academy, a new non-profit inclusion school for Autistic children here in Santa Rosa Beach, and they would like to share this Tee Up For Autism event on Saturday, September 9 with all who might be interested.

Please join them for a fun day of golf, food, entertainment and PRIZES to help raise awareness for Autism and benefit South Walton Academy.

If you are not a golfer, you can Sponsor a Child, Donate a Raffle Prize, Sponsor-a-Hole or Sponsor-an-Event: Longest Drive or Closest to the Pin.

Go to www.southwaltonacademy.com for event registration/sponsorship information.

IMPORTANT:  The Academy also has a Wish List, and needs the following items.  Donations would be greatly appreciated.  There will be a box in the Narthex.  If you can’t find it, please ask Cyndi or Tom Talty. PLEASE HELP DONATE TO THIS WORTHY CAUSE!

new bible study beginning in late august!

Luke and Acts

Begins August 30th.
Simple Faith Church, Wednesdays 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Explorer’s Bible Study, incorporates a DVD lesson and workbook discussion questions. Cost of materials is $24.00

All are welcome!

Come join us as we study the 2 Books written by the only
Gentile writer of the Bible.

Of all of Paul’s friends, there may have been no other more dearer than Luke.  Luke, a physician, was a man of culture, careful intelligence and of a very tender and sympathetic heart.  He loved Jesus and served Him with his whole heart.  The first 12 lessons will be in the Gospel of Luke.  In Acts, we will study of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and grow more and more in the knowledge of Who the Holy Spirit is. This is not only a study of the History of the church forming but a study of how the Holy Spirit works through us as believers today.  A transforming and life changing study of God’s Word.

Any questions and to order a book:

“The Traveling Twenties”
(AKA Random Acts of Kindness)

“The Beginning…”

It started one day with an eye-opening realization. Not everyone had enough to eat or a friend or smile or heat or even a place to lay their head at night. Everyone was different. Everyone was in need and some were in need more than others. Twenties found their way into some very interesting adventures when they were put into the hands of those who cared but were unable to do. Those people then put twenties into the hands of those who saw but didn’t have twenties to give.  When hearts say help and God says move, adventures are soon to follow!!!

Adventure 15:

While sitting at a popular chain restaurant, a man approached our table to ask for some spare cash. We were sitting with a dear friend who was very approachable but he had no money and shook his head sadly. The man’s countenance fell and his shoulders drooped as he moved away totally ignoring us at the table.

One of us jumped up to go to the car to get the twenty and as he watched one of us leave he got very scared. “I don’t want to get in any trouble so l’ll leave,” he said, and he started to go. We tried to reassure him it was OK. Just follow him as he is going to help you, not report you. He was very worried, but received the twenties to go see his sick father now that he could get a bus ticket.

You may wonder why he was so picky about who he asked and why he was afraid of being reported. He was in his mid-twenties, heavily tattooed, especially around his mouth. He could have been considered scary but he was the one who was scared and we felt his panic. Twenties don’t worry about those things, they just serve the Lord.

Adventure 16 coming soon!

Can we talk???

Mentor – Become a mentor to a child in South Walton County today!

Please add Amber Elledge and her family to the prayer list.  Amber and Erica facilitated our nursery at the church for years.  Her brother died yesterday and his death is under investigation.  He has a young son Xaiden who is celebrating his 5th birthday today, but does not know that his father had gone to be with Jesus yet.

Cindy L. McBrayer

Please add my cousin Wanda Stilwell and her husband Ray Stillwell to the prayer list.  My cousin Wanda, age 60, has early onset Alzheimer’s.  Her caretaker is her husband Ray.  Ray was involved in a terrible motorcycle accident on Friday in Cleveland, TN and he is in very critical condition at Erlanger Hospital.  My cousin will probably end up going into a long-term home care system.  I know she is very scared, confused, and mad all at the same time.  It has been sad for the family to see her mind deteriorate and she will have to be cared for by people she doesn’t even know which will only complicate everything further. 🙁

Thank you,

Cindy McBrayer

Praise and thank you God and thank you for all your prayers. Moved Ashley to Shepard Center in Atlanta and we are very happy because they will work his brain and put him through therapy to get him as far as possible, which we expect to be almost perfect because of what he has already done with God ‘s Miracles.

Things are looking up and all Miracles of God so far got him this far because he has had no specific therapy. Thank you for your prayers… they are working. We will have an update on his improvement.

If you’d like to follow Ashley’s progress on the Facebook page it’s called
Praying for Ashley

Here’s the most recent update:

Ashley is ready to start full day therapy tomorrow! He is talking really well and louder since I saw him last week!! He is cracking jokes and was so happy to see Rivers!
God is good!!!
