Week ending December 10

this weeK…

We have a beautiful 7’ lighted Christmas tree donated by Donna Callahan. Thanks, Donna!!!  We are hoping that each will bring one ornament from your personal collection to put on the tree. You can have it back!  When you come in Sunday, or Wednesday Bible study, put it on the tree. Choose a special one to honor our Baby Jesus’ Birthday!

We also have 2 huge wreaths with no decorations on them. I had used them as Spring wreaths, but now they need Christmas decorations.  Would anyone like to take them on?

From our Christmas elf, Nancy McConnell. Any questions, call or text Nancy at 850 865-1140.

Marcille Wallis & Friends, pictured above, is a high-energy traditional Celtic band but oh, so much more!  We infuse our performances with music and dance from many genres,
including bluegrass and old-time Appalachian, rock and classical, and Christian hymns, always staying true to our Celtic heritage.

Rich and Kathy Hines just moved to their new home near Grayton Beach and have a bunch of moving boxes for free to anyone that might need them. Their phone numbers are 913-219-7627 or 913-226-6758. They would be happy to recycle to someone else that could use them. Thanks.

HURRICANE RELIEF

The long-term plan for hurricane relief has shifted to Puerto Rico, which will take years to recover. Getting people, even supplies there, is nearly impossible right now. However, we have multiple contacts on the island and are staying connected. The Puerto Rico trip has been pushed back until the first of the year because the area we were going to has been quarantined because of water contamination.

In the short term, we will be assisting the Immokalee Community in Collier County, Florida. This is an agricultural community that suffered a good deal of hurricane damage. Mostly tenants and renters, their housing is going to be taken care of, but the Guadalupe Social Services program is in need of supplies. We will provide further information in the days ahead, and deliver a load of supplies to them.

Missed your chance to pack a shoebox for the Operation Christmas Child -Samaritan’s Purse?

We have several boxes left so you can pick them up this Sunday, December 10, but you will need to bring them back to the church by Wednesday December 13 ready to go . The team from A Simple Faith headed to the Atlanta Processing Center is leaving early Friday AM December 15th. Call Nancy Gross with any questions 850-797-6926. Blessings to all! Merry Christmas!

  Just Think About This

Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?

What if we flipped through it several times a day?

What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?

What if we used it to receive messages from the text?

What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?

What if we gave it to kids as gifts?

What if we used it when we traveled?

What if we used it in case of emergency?

This is something to make you go….hmm…where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing.

Unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill.

Can we talk???

Journeys with the Messiah: The Parable Edition by Michael Belk

With his camera, creativity and unique story-telling skills, Michael Belk embarked on a journey to explore the modern-day relevance of the centuries-old messages of Jesus. The result is a magnificently-beautiful and thought-provoking collection of fine art, Journeys with the Messiah. These compelling photographs capture 1st Century Jesus intimately interacting with 21st Century Wall Street executives, high rollers, Nazis and people of questionable character. Produced in the ancient Italian city of Matera, this one-of-a-kind photographic journey incites a fresh perspective of Jesus. It is a journey for all people of all faiths. Michael’s vision to share these images includes a limited edition fine art collection, an exhibit, the Journeys Book, DVD, posters, interactive web site and more. All of the Journeys with the Messiah images (45 total) and the messages they depict are bound together in our beautiful, oversized, deluxe religious coffee table book. It is 9.75″ wide by 12.75″ tall – 108 pages – and includes fold-out spreads of The Last Supper and Passover.

The Jesus Tribe: Following Christ in the Land of the Empire by Ronnie McBrayer

We operate under the notion that America belongs to us Christians and that we belong to it. We believe that preaching the Kingdom of God and rallying around the red, white, and blue are always compatible, but if you are like a growing number of Jesus followers, you’ve had this splinter in your mind for a while now that tells you there is something suspicious about attaching a national flag—any national flag—to the cross.

With the Sermon on the Mount as the constant reference point, The Jesus Tribe fleshes out the implications, possibilities, contradictions, and complexities of what it means to live within the Jesus Tribe and in the shadow of the American Empire.  One of his absolute bests, particularly during his “Keeping the Faith” series of sermons!

One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp

Just like you, Ann Voskamp hungers to live her one life well. Forget the bucket lists that have us escaping our everyday lives for exotic experiences. “How,” Ann wondered, “do we find joy in the midst of deadlines, debt, drama, and daily duties? What does the Christ-life really look like when your days are gritty, long—and sometimes even dark? How is God even here?”In One Thousand Gifts, Ann invites you to embrace everyday blessings and embark on the transformative spiritual discipline of chronicling God’s gifts. It’s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, we discover the life we’ve always wanted … a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. We come to feel and know the impossible right down in our bones: we are wildly loved — by God. Let Ann’s beautiful, heart-aching stories of the everyday give you a way of seeing that opens your eyes to ordinary amazing grace, a way of being present to God that makes you deeply happy, and a way of living that is finally fully alive. Come live the best dare of all!

Mentor – Become a mentor to a child in South Walton County today!

Who’s Important?

It’s probably the hardest lesson a success-oriented individual can ever learn. Most of us aren’t nearly as important as we think we are — and sometimes as others tell us we are. One of the wonderful things about Christ’s religion is that it puts everyone on the same rung of the ladder — Christ is the great equalizer.

There’s a story of a newly-elected politician who went to our nation’s capital to get acquainted with the place. At the home of a high-ranking senator he was trying to get the feel of this great city and all he anticipated he would be able to accomplish. He greatly admired the prominence of his host and spoke of his grandiose intentions and plans. Somewhere, back in his mind, he even entertained the possibility of actually running things in the country from the White House.

As they looked out over the Potomac River, they noticed a log floating down stream. It was rotten, old, deteriorating, obviously of no worth. The older senator remarked to his young friend, “You know, that log is about a perfect example of what this city is, and what our nation is becoming.”

“How’s that?” asked his young friend. “Well you see, there are probably hundreds of grub worms, no telling how many ants, and bugs and critters of about every kind you can name, and they’re just floating down the stream on that rotten old log.”

“Well, how’s that like this city?” the young man wondered aloud. “It’s simple,” replied the senior senator, “Every one of those critters thinks he’s steering the log.”

With no intent to demean the government, how true it is in almost every area of life that ambition often outruns reality. It is the meek who inherit the earth, not the mighty. It is the poor in spirit who enjoy the rule of God — not the arrogant and haughty. Paul summed all this up for us quite nicely:

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith” – Rom. 12:3.

Please add Karen Brown to your prayers.  Karen is the daughter-in-law of Mickey and Linda Brown (snow birds from Manistee, MI) She was hit by a car crossing the road at her job last week near the hospital. She is facing major reconstructive surgery to her face and jaw this week.  3 plates will be put into place and she will have major swelling.  I ask that you keep this sweet family in your prayer!

Thank you!
Cindy L. McBrayer

____

Please continue praying for Crystal!  She is an employee of Sacred Heart and a very good friend of Erica and Amber who watched ASF nursery for years.  Crystal has an adopted daughter Zoe that some of you may remember.  She is fighting cancer and had a 20-hour surgery this week.  Your prayers would be greatly appreciated.

I know many of you have been anxiously waiting for an update.

She’s not alone. Her Mama and Chris are with her.

She was more alert this morning, moving her limbs and eyelids more and actually realizing she’s on a vent.

She went back to the OR to have an Ileostomy put in and some of her colon had to be removed because one of the connections separated and feces was getting in her belly.

They washed her belly out with water and they will take her back to the OR on Wednesday to rewash her abdomen again, and change wound vac -this bag will likely be temporary.

They also debrided her wound in the OR, cutting away all dead tissue.

Kidney function is better, creatinine is 1.7. YAY! They’d like to see more urine output.

The goal is to try to extubate her on Wednesday.

Her b/p out of the OR was low but has since stabilized.

Because she so recently came from the OR they’ll monitor her closely, but right now they are optimistic with the things they’ve done to get her turned around and on a clean recovery. She has a long road ahead of her but she’s on the right path and in the best hands.

Please continue to pray for Chrystal and everyone involved in her care.

bible study!

Simple Faith Church, Wednesdays 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Explorer’s Bible Study, incorporates a DVD lesson and workbook discussion questions. Cost of materials is $24.00

All are welcome!

Come join us as we study the 2 Books written by the only Gentile writer of the Bible.

Of all of Paul’s friends, there may have been no other more dearer than Luke.  Luke, a physician, was a man of culture, careful intelligence and of a very tender and sympathetic heart.  He loved Jesus and served Him with his whole heart.  The first 12 lessons will be in the Gospel of Luke.  In Acts, we will study of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and grow more and more in the knowledge of Who the Holy Spirit is. This is not only a study of the History of the church forming but a study of how the Holy Spirit works through us as believers today.  A transforming and life changing study of God’s Word.

Any questions and to order a book:

Leaving Religion, Following Jesus by Ronnie McBrayer

Leaving Religion, Following Jesus is a book about running after Jesus, about a journey with the Christ—his journey and yours. It is a book about looking and listening to the unexpected. It is a book about opening our eyes, unstopping our ears, and soaking up the gracious wonder that he is, the wonder that surrounds us.
We do not know where Jesus will lead us; we have no idea of the long journey that waits for any of us. But it begins with that first step; that first halting, timid step that puts you on the road away from religion and onward to the Christ.  This is quintessential McBrayer.  The best!

Send the Fire Truck!

In a small eastern Kentucky town, the local police chief also served as part of the Volunteer Fire Department. His job was to answer the phone and in the event of a fire was to ring the fire bell to summons all the volunteer firemen in the county.

One Saturday morning, the phone rang and the chief answered, “Fire department.” Out of the ear phone came the terrified voice of a woman yelling, “Hurry, send the fire truck!”, but immediately hang up the phone. The chief sat there stunned. “Send it where?”

In a very few minutes, the phone rang again, and the chief again answered, “Fire department.” Once more, in hysterical cries, the voice on the other end of the phone cried, “Hurry! Hurry!, send the fire truck,” and again immediately hung up the phone.

The chief was even more perturbed. He ran out into the street and surveyed the scene for a full 360 degrees, looking for smoke. No smoke. Where was the fire? Whose house was going up in flames? Were there children who were in danger? All these things flitted through his mind.

He heard the phone rang again, and on the way back to the station office, he devised a way to keep the lady on the phone long enough to find where to send the fire truck. He grabbed the phone, and yelled, “Where’s the fire?” The voice on the other end returned the yell by saying, “In the kitchen!” and promptly hung up the phone once more.

So much of what is called religion is a lot like this humorous situation. Insufficient information leaves people insufficiently informed and the lack of information promotes nothing but insufficient confusion. Only the full truth of God satisfies every situation in life.

It is by “every word” that comes from God’s mouth, that our Lord says life in him is possible.

Thank you!

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis

C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce is a classic Christian allegorical tale about a bus ride from hell to heaven. An extraordinary meditation upon good and evil, grace and judgment, Lewis’s revolutionary idea in the The Great Divorce is that the gates of Hell are locked from the inside. Using his extraordinary descriptive powers, Lewis’ The Great Divorce will change the way we think about good and evil.

I am comforted by God’s loving presence in my heart.

After the devastating loss of a loved one, I may feel overwhelmed with grief as I struggle to reconcile my life moving forward without this person.

I find solace as I turn to God in prayer. I place my hand over my heart and with each beat I begin to feel a growing sense of peace. In this quiet moment, I surrender to the loving presence of God within. Divine love is the soothing, comforting balm that my emotions so desperately seek.

Like a child comforted by a loving parent, I feel nurtured and cared for by my Creator. My connection with the Divine supports me in moving through sadness. In these sacred times, my heart is healed and I am comforted.

For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.—Isaiah 49:13

It’s Hard to Convince Your Children

It’s hard to convince your children that the church is the most important thing in the world when you are negligent about attending its services and supporting its work.

It’s hard to convince your children that the church is the greatest institution in the world when you permit them to miss services to go elsewhere.

It’s hard to convince your children that the church is to be held higher than anything when you insist that they do their homework for public school but permit them to neglect their Bible study.

It’s hard to convince your children that the church is the most important institution when you give little to help finance its work and encourage them to do likewise.

It’s hard to convince your children that they should respect the church when you continually criticize the leadership, belittle the teacher’s work and appear a habitual faultfinder.

It’s hard to convince your children the work of the church is important, when you have no part in what work is being done, either financially or personally.

It’s hard to convince your children sin is a serious matter when they know you do things that are wrong, and you are not concerned about making the necessary corrections in life.

It’s hard to convince there is really a heaven, and a hell, whey they realize that this life is the most important thing there is to you, and they don’t see you making much preparation for a life after death.

It’s hard to convince your children, when you don’t even try to convince them of much of anything — just let them do their thing.

Lessons From a Third Grade Dropout by Rick Rigsby

Be inspired by the book behind the graduation speech by Dr. Rick Rigsby’s– now with 100 million views on Facebook and YouTube.

After his wife died, Rick Rigsby was ready to give up. The bare minimum was good enough. Rigsby was content to go through the motions, living out his life as a shell of himself. But then he remembered the lessons his father taught him years before – something insanely simple, yet incredibly profound.

These lessons weren’t in advanced mathematics or the secrets of the stock market. They were quite straightforward, in fact, for Rigsby’s father never made it through third grade. But if this uneducated man’s instructions were powerful enough to produce a Ph.D. and a judge – imagine what they can do for you.

Join Rigsby as he dusts off time-tested beliefs and finds brilliantly simple answers to modern society’s questions. In a magnificent testament to the “Greatest Generation” which gave so much and asked so little in return, Lessons from a Third Grade Dropout will challenge you while reigniting your passion to lead a truly fulfilling life. After all, it’s never too late to learn a little bit more about life – just ask the third-grade dropout.

HURRICANE RELIEF

Plans are in the works and updates will be coming soon.

Everything I Need to Know About Life, I learned From Noah’s Ark

One: Don’t miss the boat.

Two: Remember that we are all in the same boat.

Three: Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah built the Ark.

Four: Stay fit. When you’re 600 years old, someone may ask you to do something really big.

Five: Don’t listen to critics; just get on with the job that needs to be done.

Six: Build your future on high ground.

Seven: For safety’s sake, travel in pairs.

Eight: Speed isn’t always an advantage. The snails were on board with the cheetahs.

Nine: When you’re stressed, float a while.

Ten: Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs; the Titanic by professionals.

Eleven: No matter the storm, when you are with God, there’s always a rainbow waiting.

Illustrations and examples are wonderful, and we are thrilled to have this opportunity to study and be “spoon fed”.  Also, Rev. 1:3 says, “Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy and keep those things which are written in it, for the time is near.”  If you want to get blessed, come on down!

Blessings!

READERS’ CORNER:

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom

“Every experience God gives us . . . is the perfect preparation for the future only He can see.”–Corrie ten Boom

Corrie ten Boom was a Dutch watchmaker who became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler’s concentration camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century. In World War II she and her family risked their lives to help Jews and underground workers escape from the Nazis, and for their work they were tested in the infamous Nazi death camps. Only Corrie among her family survived to tell the story of how faith ultimately triumphs over evil.

Here is the riveting account of how Corrie and her family were able to save many of God’s chosen people. For 35 years millions have seen that there is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still. Now The Hiding Place, repackaged for a new generation of readers, continues to declare that God’s love will overcome, heal, and restore.

“A groundbreaking book that shines a clear light on one of the darkest moments of history.”–Philip Yancey, author, The Jesus I Never Knew

“Ten Boom’s classic is even more relevant to the present hour than at the time of its writing. We . . . need to be inspired afresh by the courage manifested by her family.”–Jack W. Hayford, president, International Foursquare Church; chancellor, The King’s College and Seminary

“The Hiding Place is a classic that begs revisiting. Corrie ten Boom lived the deeper life with God. Her gripping story of love in action will challenge and inspire you!”–Joyce Meyer, best-selling author and Bible teacher.

guitar man

La Vergne, Tennessee—the inside of 87-year-old Stuart’s home is covered in faded photographs and country music albums.

Black-and-white images of a young man line the walls. The photogenic young man is strong, a guitarist, a mechanic, a soldier, a laborer, a father of seven.

His best girl Faye is a living saint.

“When we met,” his wife says, tapping a picture frame. “I’s seventeen, Stuart was nineteen. We were babies.”

Stuart Wood is my good friend. I wasn’t far past twenty when I met him.

He was a silver-haired man living in a double-wide trailer off Musset Bayou Road—only steps from my house. I was a skinny young fool.

He used to smack my shoulders and say, “This here’s my BOY.”

I never got tired of hearing that.

His wife would serve us beer on coasters. Stuart would tell war stories. Then, he’d flatpick a red Gretsch guitar for my entertainment.

I would watch his quick fingers play “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” or “San Antonio Rose,” or “Peanut Vendor.”

I wanted to be Stuart.

Sometimes, I’d stay for supper. After a meal, we’d walk to Stuart’s garage. He’d light a cigarette, we’d talk about cars. The oil cans on his shelves were older than I was.

We’d sit on swivel stools—the kind in body shops—and make easy conversation.

And that’s what we’re doing now. Stuart is in his recliner, telling stories about a bygone era.

The Alzheimer’s makes him forgetful, the diabetes makes his feet numb. He just lost his driver’s license.

That hurt.

But nothing has changed his sunny disposition. He’s still Mister Happy. He still piddles on his Cadillac.

He hasn’t tasted beer in months, but he wants one today. So do I.We sit together, holding long-neck bottles. He retells his top-40 greatest memories. I could listen to him talk until the second coming of Roger Miller. The more he speaks, the younger I get, and the younger he becomes. The lines on his face disappear.

His hoarse laugh takes me back to a time I hadn’t yet figured out what I wanted to do with my life. And it reminds me that I never did figure it out.

I still wish I was Stuart. I wish I smiled as easily as he does. And I wish I played guitar like him.

“Haven’t played my damn GEE-tar in years,” he says. “Can’t make my fingers move no more.”

I tell him not to bother playing if he doesn’t feel up to it.

“Hell with that,” he says. “I’ma play for you, boy.”

Before long, he’s holding the dusty Country Gentleman Gretsch in his old hands. He plays. And even though his fingers don’t work, the music comes back to him.

When he’s done playing “Bye Bye Blues,” he inspects his fingertips.

“Aye God,” he says, laughing. “Feels like someone chopping my hands with an axe.”

His wife snaps our picture with an old-fashioned camera. We have our arms around each other. Then, Stuart hugs me. I feel his shaky muscles squeeze. Why does life move so fast.

He slaps my shoulders. His eyes are still bright.

“This here’s my boy,” he says.

I drove a long way just to hear him say that.
